Award: 2025 Project of the Year
Installer: SUNDEK of Washington
At SUNDEK’s convention in February, SUNDEK of Washington was awarded the Project of the Year for 2025. While this small project involved resurfacing only 200 square-feet, the solution resolved an issue critical to opening a massive multiuse center just minutes from the Capitol.
Contact Sundek of WashingtonThe project came about when Gilbane, one of the nation’s largest general contractors, was in the midst of transforming the former MacMillan Aqueduct site into a premier multiuse center near the Capitol. At the center of the plaza, they needed two horizontal doors installed in the ground that would lead to pump rooms below. The doors were supposed to have a two-inch inlay but only had a one-inch inlay. This miscalculation wasn’t discovered until after the doors were installed.
Replacing the doors would be extremely expensive and take several months and reconstruction to retrofit. Ruppert, the site’s landscape contractor, contacted Bob Miller, vice president of SUNDEK of Washington, for a solution.
Bob and his team came up with a solution—a coating of SunSplash over the doors that would blend in with the surrounding high-end pavers.
The issue was resolved beautifully and the Reservoir District’s outdoor space moved forward as planned.
